Letters of Recommendation
· Make sure you submit your completed scholarship on time
o Include the information from your Binder
· Make sure you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
o It opens October 1st every year
o Loans, Grants, and Work Study are types of financial aid
Types of Grants
o Federal Pell Grant – given by the federal government to students who have a financial need and have not earned their first bachelor’s degree
o Federal Supplemental Educational Grant – (FSEOG) a grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need
o Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP) – a grant for students attending a Virginia college or university based on need
o Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant – (VTAG) a grant given to students who attend accredited private, nonprofit colleges. You must apply for this. ($5,000.00 for 2023-2024, some schools get more than $5,000.00)
o Virginia Commonwealth Awards – up to $9,000.00 given per academic year to needy students who do not qualify for the VTAG
· Norfolk State University has a VCAN Scholarship
o Must live within 45 miles of NSU’s campus
o Must apply separately
o Must have filed a FASFA
